Why Is My Washing Machine Vibrating? 5 Fixes That Actually Work
Is your washing machine vibrating, shaking, or walking across the floor during spin cycles? You're not alone. This is one of the most common household problems, and it can damage your floor, wear out your machine faster, and drive your neighbours crazy. The good news: there are several effective fixes, and most cost very little.
Why Does a Washing Machine Vibrate?
Washing machines vibrate during the spin cycle because the drum rotates at high speed (typically 800โ1400 RPM). Any imbalance โ whether from an uneven floor, an unbalanced load, or worn shock absorbers โ gets amplified into shaking and noise.
Fix 1: Level the Machine (Free)
The most common cause of severe vibration is a machine that isn't sitting level on the floor. Most washing machines have adjustable feet that you can twist to raise or lower each corner. Use a spirit level on top of the machine and adjust until it's perfectly level on all four corners. Always re-tighten the locking nuts after adjusting.
Fix 2: Use an Anti-Vibration Mat (Most Effective)
An anti-vibration washing machine mat sits under your machine and absorbs the kinetic energy that would otherwise transfer to your floor. High-quality rubber mats can help reduce vibration and noise and completely stop the machine from moving. This is especially important if you have tile, hardwood, or laminate floors that amplify sound.
When choosing an anti-vibration mat, look for:
- Industrial-grade natural rubber (not cheap foam)
- Minimum 6mm thickness for maximum absorption
- Non-slip surface on both top and bottom
- Size that covers the machine's full footprint
Fix 3: Check the Load Balance
A washing machine with a single heavy item (like a duvet or pair of jeans) will vibrate more than one with a balanced load. If you're washing one heavy item, add a few lighter items to balance the drum. Never wash a single item alone in a top-loader.
Fix 4: Check the Drum Bearings
If your machine has always vibrated but recently it's gotten worse, the drum bearings may be wearing out. Signs of worn bearings include a grinding or rumbling noise during the spin cycle. This requires a repair technician, but catching it early prevents more expensive damage.
Fix 5: Install Rubber Feet Pads
Separate anti-vibration rubber pads that go under each foot of the machine can also help. These are particularly useful if you have a machine on a raised surface or on a wooden floor where vibrations travel easily.
What NOT to Do
- Don't put cardboard under the machine โ it compresses over time and becomes ineffective
- Don't overload the machine to "balance" it โ this damages the drum and bearings
- Don't ignore the problem โ persistent vibration shortens the life of your machine significantly
If levelling and load balancing do not solve the problem, check the appliance manual or contact a qualified technician before continuing to use the machine.
