How to Organise Your Wardrobe: 8 Steps to a Space That Actually Works
A well-organised wardrobe doesn't require a big budget or a full home renovation. With the right tools and a systematic approach, you can transform even the smallest wardrobe into a space-efficient storage solution that makes getting dressed a pleasure rather than a chore.
Step 1: Declutter First
Before buying any organisation products, take everything out and make three piles: keep, donate, and discard. A good rule of thumb: if you haven't worn it in the last 12 months and it doesn't have sentimental value, let it go. A smaller, curated wardrobe is always easier to organise than a packed one.
Step 2: Upgrade Your Hangers
This single change makes the biggest visual difference in any wardrobe. Standard wire or chunky plastic hangers are:
- Bulky (waste significant rail space)
- Slippery (clothes fall off constantly)
- Shape-damaging (create shoulder bumps in knitwear)
Slim velvet hangers solve all three problems. At just 5mm thick, you can fit more items on the same rail. The velvet coating prevents any item โ including silk blouses and strappy tops โ from slipping. And the curved shoulder design preserves the natural shape of your clothes. Replacing your entire wardrobe with slim velvet hangers takes about an hour and transforms the look completely.
Step 3: Organise by Category, Then by Colour
The most efficient wardrobes are organised by category first:
- Tops (T-shirts, shirts, blouses)
- Bottoms (trousers, skirts, jeans)
- Dresses and jumpsuits
- Jackets and coats
- Workwear / formal
Within each category, arrange by colour in a rainbow sequence (white โ cream โ yellow โ orange โ red โ pink โ purple โ blue โ green โ brown โ grey โ black). This makes finding specific items instantly faster and makes the wardrobe look intentional and beautiful.
Step 4: Use Cascading Hangers for Trousers and Skirts
Multi-layer cascading hangers let you hang 5 pairs of trousers in the vertical space that one pair would normally occupy. This is a game-changer for anyone with a small wardrobe and lots of bottoms. Look for cascading hangers with non-slip clips to prevent fabric slipping or creasing.
Step 5: Add Vertical Shelf Dividers
If your wardrobe has shelves for folded items, shelf dividers prevent neat piles from toppling over when you pull an item from the middle. Acrylic dividers are the most elegant solution and let you see everything clearly.
Step 6: Use the Back of the Door
The back of a wardrobe door is often wasted space. Over-door hooks or slim storage pockets can hold accessories, belts, scarves, and shoes that would otherwise clutter the main space.
Step 7: Store Out-of-Season Items
Dedicate the least accessible parts of your wardrobe (high shelves, back of drawers) to out-of-season items. Vacuum storage bags are excellent for bulky winter items โ they compress down to a fraction of their size. Label everything clearly.
Step 8: Maintain the System
An organised wardrobe only stays organised if you maintain it. The golden rule: one in, one out. Every time you bring a new item in, something goes out. Spend 5 minutes once a week tidying any items that have drifted from their category.
