10 Laundry Tips That Will Save You Hours Every Week
Laundry is one of those chores that most people dread. But with the right setup and a few smart habits, you can cut your laundry time in half while getting better results. Here are 10 tips that professional home organisers swear by.
1. Sort As You Go (Stop Sorting on Laundry Day)
The number one time-waster in laundry is the sorting stage. Most people dump everything in a single hamper and then spend 10โ15 minutes separating colours on wash day. The solution? A 2-section or 3-section laundry hamper that lets you drop lights and darks separately as you undress. By the time you're ready to wash, sorting is already done.
2. Use Mesh Laundry Bags for Delicates
Bras, delicate underwear, silk blouses and activewear all suffer in a standard wash cycle. The drum agitation, friction, and heat break down fibres rapidly. Mesh laundry bags create a protective barrier that lets water and detergent through while preventing damage. Invest in a set of different sizes โ small for socks and bras, large for sweaters.
3. Never Overstuff Your Washing Machine
A common mistake that leads to clothes not getting properly clean. Your machine needs space to agitate the clothes. As a rule: fill the drum no more than three-quarters full. For top-loaders, leave enough space to fit your hand flat on top of the clothes.
4. Match Water Temperature to Fabric
- Cold water (20โ30ยฐC) โ darks, colours, delicates, synthetics
- Warm water (40ยฐC) โ cotton, linen, moderately soiled items
- Hot water (60ยฐC) โ whites, towels, bedding, heavily soiled items
5. Stop Your Washing Machine From Walking
A vibrating machine that "walks" across the floor is not only annoying โ it can damage your flooring and even loosen internal components over time. An anti-vibration washing machine mat can help reduce movement and noise. This is especially important in apartments where neighbours below can hear every spin cycle.
6. Air Dry When Possible
Tumble dryers are convenient but expensive to run and harsh on fabrics. Air drying on a foldable clothes drying rack extends the life of your clothes significantly, especially for knitwear, activewear, and anything with stretch. A good drying rack folds flat for easy storage and can be used indoors or outdoors.
7. Pre-Treat Stains Immediately
The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Always treat stains as soon as possible. For most stains, cold water and a little dish soap or specialist pre-treatment spray will work if applied immediately. Hot water "cooks" protein stains (blood, egg, dairy) into the fabric โ always start cold.
8. Use Slim Velvet Hangers to Save Wardrobe Space
After washing, how you store your clothes matters too. Standard plastic hangers are bulky, cause shoulder bumps, and let clothes slip off. Slim velvet hangers take up 3x less space and grip even silky fabrics. Switching your whole wardrobe to slim hangers is one of the best organisation decisions you can make.
9. Clean Your Washing Machine Monthly
A dirty machine means dirty clothes. Run an empty hot cycle with white vinegar or a specialist washing machine cleaner once a month. Wipe the rubber seal (front loaders) where mould builds up. A clean machine also eliminates that musty smell some clothes get after washing.
10. Create a Laundry Schedule
Instead of letting laundry pile up all week and spending your entire Sunday on it, try washing one or two loads every 2โ3 days. Smaller loads are easier to manage, less overwhelming, and can be done during the evening without disrupting your weekend.
